Other Computer Training

One can learn to do a limited number of things with a computer just by learning to open a few programs (sometimes called applications) and entering a limited amount of necessary information. However, to feel comfortable using a computer and to unleash the power of the computer, one needs to learn a number of basic skills.

There are a variety of ways to learn computer basics including, but not limited to, in a structured classroom situation, from a book, from an online tutorial or help from your friends.

The computer club offers members three Windows computer skills classesthat should be taken in this order: 1. Basic, 2. Intermediate, and 3, File Management.

The computer club also offers members a number of books for checkout at the computer club meetings. These books cover a variety of computer topics for beginners to advanced users.

You can take charge of your own training by utilizing tutorials that can be found on your computer or on the Internet. One major advantage to tutorials is that you can read something until you think you understand it, minimize the window in which you are working and immediately do the operation on your computer to see whether or not you understood it. If not, you can go back and review the material until you can do the operation.

The first place to look is in "Windows Help." You can open "Windows Help" by left clicking on the Start Button, highlighting "Help" (in Windows XP)or "Help and Support" (in Vista and Windows7) and left clicking on the mouse. Look for something called "Getting Started" or "Tutorial". It is found in different ways depending on what version of Windows you are using. It is possible that your computer vendor did not install all help material on your computer. If not, the information may be found on the Windows disk.
