November 16th, 2005

Each Wednesday , meetings are held in the Garden Room at 1:30 p.m. On November 16th, President Dick Harris opened the meeting. Submitted questions were discussed and solved. I learned to clean the heads of my Canon printer after it was unused for an extended period. Go into Settings, Printers, right click to get properties, click on Maintenance, Clean heads and clean nozzle. I did this a couple of times and my printer is producing easy to read material. Yah!

Dick presented a Microsoft program called Genuine Advantage. Only when you run a genuine Microsoft program are you able to get the Microsoft updates. Your Window program must be validated to receive these updates. Visit the www. Microsoft .com website, click on updates and Microsoft does the rest. Dick answers questions regarding Microsoft Windows.

A brief question period solved many problems for VCC members. This help among the members appeared to be very well received.

A draw was held for several small prizes, t-shirt, pens and pads, pens and stress balls.

Household memberships are $10.00 for the winter season. Lorna Trapp will be glad to take your money.

Welcome back!

This was a question answer period. The VCC has software available to transfer old files to a new computer. This software is available to all members. Two programs are Laplink & Gold and PC to PC.

There are programs available to wipe your personal information off your computer if you selling or donating your computer. These software programs are called Secure Clean or Erase. They remove your personal information but not the programs e.g. Windows. This is important to remove personal files from your computer before discarding. Deleting this information does not remove the files from your hard drive.

From the question answer period, some points were discussed:

There is software to provide a firewall to prevent someone from hacking into your computer. Zone Alarm offers good protection. It is a free program which can be downloaded by visiting their website at zonelabs.com

There is also hardware firewalls which is physically plug into your computer.

Virus protection is necessary. Update the definitions regularly. Run a full scan regularly. On a brand new computer visit the website of your virus protection and update immediately before you do anything else. Update your firewall next.

Flashdrive/Thumb drive/ stick plugs into your USB port costs about $60. for a known name brand like Sony, Toshiba, Memorex with 512 mg or 1 gig memory. Avoid cheap $15+ drives and avoid problems. These drives are great for backing up programs and files especially for transfer.

Invite your neighbour to our meetings. Visit us twice free. Membership only costs $10. per season. Come and learn or share your knowledge.

We always need monitors for our lab. You may use any available computer while you are the monitor. No previous knowledge needed.

Question Period.

  1. Always save the registry first before making changes. Go into the registry as a last resource.
  2. To have a calendar as a home page- Go to Accessories, get calendar, create a shortcut, save to desktop. Drag & drop to the startup menu.
  3. In Juno email, to have addresses blind: write email, send to yourself, cc to all others and the individual addresses do not appear in all emails.
  4. Wifi is having some problems. Many people are getting kicked off line and can not get back on line. Microwaves and some cell phones interfere with the signal. One solution is to totally unplug your unit for 15 seconds. When you go back, wifi gives you a new IP address. Please call the 800 number before you call Joe.
  5. Sign up for 3 free issues of Smart Computing Magazine. The usual price is about $30. per year. This is an excellent magazine and a great way to try it out. Call K.E. Johnson #423
  6. PhotoStory3 is a free program for digital pictures. It is a free program from Microsoft after you visit their site and verify that Windows on your machine is legal software. You must verify to obtain Windows updates.

Presentation of Digital Imaging Pro 10 - a Microsoft program was presented by Dick Harris. Some of the highlights were:

  1. Able to change the intensity of red eye-easy to use
  2. Able to straighten background
  3. Able to remove shadows by adding touch-up & auto fix
  4. Panaromic stitching combines 2 pictures
  5. Smart erase-removes unwanted material from the original. Fill-in adds the background here.
  6. Able to change background by painting in clouds or sunshine.
  7. Exposure can be lightened or darkened.
  8. Contrast can be heighten.
  9. Able to reset if you make a mistake.
  10. Excellent for collages.
  11. Has a digital library.
  12. Check done after each picture to save changes.

Photo story adds music, voice or text to your pictures.

Draws were held at the conclusion of the meeting. Good Job Dick!

Speaker was Mark Hayley from www.mypctalks.com

He sells DVD's on travel to America's National Parks, Britain, Japan, Hawaii, and Learning the languages of these countries.

Making Great Movies:

Use a camcorder that is digital instead of the old analog variety.

Use a firewire hookup which is much faster than your USB ports. Firewire is also called 1394 or I link.

Remember making movies demands a great deal of computer space.

New computers have VHS inputs.

Announcements:

Sports Against Cancer fundraiser will be held on 1-20-2006 @5PM for live auction and on 1-21 all day for the silent auction @ the new tennis courts.

Smart Computing Magazine will be the presenters at our Jan. 11th meeting.

Our club website has a connection for a free antivirus. Apparently some people are having problems with the latest version of Norton Antivirus.

There are still a lot of people having problems getting hooked to and staying hooked to rvwifi high speed service. The park is apparently in negotiations with other servers but no timetable as to when that may change. I guess you are on your own as to how much frustration you can take.

To check on your firewall capability for your computer (you should have one) but sometimes without realising you may have several and can't get anything on or off the internet.

To Check: Select Start-Control Panel Security; Make sure it says ON; Click OK then close.

Dick Harris called the meeting to order at 1:30 pm. He announced that there would be no meeting Dec. 28. The next meeting will be January 4, 2006.

K Johnson announced that EVAC's next meeting would be on the Linux operating system for those interested. The next meeting is the 3rd meeting of the month at Las Palmas Grand. He also reminded members to sign up the free issues of Smart Computing.

Milt reminded the membership of the sign up sheet for the first Basic class. A description of the classes coming up and the dates offered are posted on the web site.

A member reminded us if we are having problems with RVWIFI that we should report these difficulties by phone so that company is aware.

The club sold the old computer. Rebates are still coming on the new computer and printer which will bring down the cost of the new computer.

A question and answer session followed by suggestions and discussion of some free programs.

K showed us how to download IrfanView. Milt showed us how to use the print screen feature of IrfanView. A discussion followed on some features of IrfanView.

No speaker this week. Next week Smart Computing Magazine will be the guest speaker.

The "PC Mover" program is available to members that have purchased a new computer and wish to move data from their old computers and clean the old one up before disposing of it. This can be a very time consuming process. Joe Chambers @ site 0410 is available to help you with a charge of not more than $100 depending on the time it takes to make the changeover. Also Dick Harris @ site 1853, our club president.

A lengthy discussion pursued concerning the parks rvwifi wireless connection. Their contract with the park expires in June 2006. Park management has contracted with a new provider for all of their parks across the country. It seems as new residents are coming in using a router system to connect, they are causing signal interruptions. Joe Chambers @site 0410 has been given a list of static addresses which will resolve the problem. If you give him a call he will assist you as soon as he can. Be Patient his list is long.

What do you do if you have a program and you don’t know what it is or where on earth it came from? Do a Goggle search. Some programs come free with your software or from your internet server.

Discussions:

Lines on photos when printed from your printer probably means that your printer is old and cannot be used for photography pixel needs. You need to invest in a new one.

If you want to view some fantastic photos from a space satellite and have high speed internet go to Goggle's home page and type in Goggle Earth in the search box. You can view your home town or home for that matter. Wow we've come a long way!!

Operating your computer in "safe mode": its referred to as safe because only a few programs are running when your computer is on. To start the computer in safe mode:

  • Turn off your computer
  • Restart
  • Push F8 repeatedly
  • Select safe mode

If you defragment your computer in safe mode its more thorough

Start-programs-accessories-system tools-defragment-C drive

Using System Restore in ME and XP

Start-programs-accessories-system tools-system restore

Restores your computer to an earlier time when you were not having problems. It is also used before installing new programs. It won't delete new data added since that restore point. If repairing a problem its also advisable to create a new restore point after the fix.

Programs which repair your windows registry are "Registry Mechanic"also "Ccleaner" and "Ezcleaner" which are available free on the internet from download.com , pcmag.com, or zd.com

Those interested signed up after meeting. Sign up sheets are kept in the lab. Classes are free to all computer club members.

Question & Answer session:

Your computer’s printer changes its settings every time you change your ink cartridges. If you find your printer won’t work after you changed inks the printer head may be worn out (especially if you are using a refilled cartridge. Sometimes you can trick it by putting a brand new cartridge in–letting it reset–then remove and place the old one that still has ink back in.

Windows XP can use flash drives (also called thumb drives) which plug into your USB ports to give you external storage. Someone found one at Best Buy for $5. Wow Quite a bargain!

Use viewpointcomputerclub.org to keep informed about what the club I doing: speaker schedules, classes, help files to assist in finding helpful internet sites or free programs, as well as the mentor’s in the club available to help you learn your software programs. The lab also has some "Video Professor" CDs you can sign on "Microsoft Word" etc.

Question and Answer Session:

Problems with Connectifi continue. Some is the fault of the high speed telephone line they ultimately must go through. The park now has only one such dedicated line. Stacey (the park manager) says they are beginning installation of the new "Tango" system and perhaps (with luck) there will be an overlap between the Connectifi and Tango when one ends and the other begins in June.

A new worm is expected on Feb 3rd. Make sure you have a current backup point on your computer and that your virus protection is up to date.

Antivirus: AOL’s McAfee version(free if you use them as your server) is not enough. Its better then nothing but AVG, Norton or McAfee paid for version is really needed too!

How to Set Restore Points:

Click Start--Click All Programs--Click Accessories--Click System Tools--Click System Restore

You will have two choices:

  1. Restore my computer to an earlier time. Your computer does this automatically from time to time. If you choose this one a calender will pop up. The darker dates are points to which you can go back to. You will not loose any documents you have saved but you will loose the programs you have loaded since that date. It will not however get rid of any viruses you have caught.
  2. Create a restore point. With this you can bring your computer back to today’s date and time. Use this setting if your concerned newly loaded programs are going to give you problems.

How to Attach a Document or Photo to Your E-mail:

  • Open your e-mail program( such as Outlook Express–Click File–click New–click Mail Message or you can simply click Create Mail
  • In the box fill in the To: Many programs will auto fill when you begin to type the receivers name.
  • Fill in Subject:
  • Place curser in the body of your letter. Type whatever message you are sending
  • Click on the paperclip with the word "Attach"
  • Insert attachment box appears: Look in: box with down arrow to its right. If what you want to send is not in the box use the down arrow to get to it. When you find what you want attached make sure it is highlighted with a dark frame. If it’s a photo make sure its in jpg format (.jpg) so its not going to take forever to send. Photos can be resized by the receiver. –click Attach–click–Send

How to Read an Attachment you received but can’t open:

Are you sure you want to?? Many viruses come by way of e-mail!

Look at the extension after the dot. Click Start–Control Panel– Folder Options– File Types–select the extension of the program you want then click OK

Guest Speaker Gene Barlow spoke on Internet Security and Hard Drive Protection. Gene is a member of the Arizona Alliance of Computer Clubs www.azacc.com as is our club. He is a software vendor and can be reached at www.usergroupstore.com. His products are available at a discount to user groups.

Although there are many benefits to computers such as: e-mail communication, as an information source, to manage your accounts, and to purchase things at your own convenience you need to take the responsibility of protecting yourself from malicious viruses, hackers, pop-up ads, and those who wish to steal information on you.

He presented some of the software he represents but said all users need protection in these four areas:

  • Virus protection
  • Spyware/ hacker proof protection
  • Firewall= an electronic wall between your computer and the internet. Windows XP is a one way only. Software security patches. Be sure to update on a weekly basis.

Protecting your hard drive:

  1. Copy all your pc files.
  2. Store them away from your hard drive.
  3. When hard drive fails you can reload your data.
  4. He recommends that you back up your most important data once a week and the whole hard drive monthly. The "restore" on your hard drive is strictly your windows programing, not any data files.

He stated that you could buy a 100gig external drive at Best Buy today for $79 after mail in rebate. It bypasses the use of disks which do not hold much memory.

Feb 15th, 2006

President Dick Harris opened our Question/Answer meeting.

  1. System Restore was demonstrated Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. You have a choice to restore using the calendar or create a new restore point, which could be stored on your desktop or My documents, etc. The purpose of the system restore is to have a safe point before adding new programs or updates.
  2. Windows updates is found by going to Start, Programs, Windows updates. It is suggested that you only download those updates that are pertinent to your individual system. e.g. if you do not use Microsoft Outlook then the updates for Microsoft Outlook are not of use to you. If you normally use a browser other than Explorer, you will find it necessary to use Explorer for Windows Updates, since they rely on ActiveX controls found in Explorer. You will also find that some web sites will not function properly unless you use Explorer because the web site was built to use ActiveX.
  3. A thumb drive is an external memory device. Drag and drop is the easiest way to store material on your thumb drive. Before you disconnect your thumb drive, go to My Computer, 2x click on programs, R.C. on eject.
  4. Juno-to get rid of junk mail, go to the Juno website to send and receive mail.
  5. To find your Firewall go Control Panel, Security Center. Remember to run only one virus protector and one firewall, as they tend to fight when put together.
  6. Tickets were sold for our banquet on Feb.24th,2006

Meeting adjourned.

Format: Question/Answer Period led by President Dick Harris

What should I look for when I buy a new laptop computer?

  1. Windows operating Systems, Linux is used mostly for business and can be very challenging.
  2. A good warranty
  3. Rebates
  4. 512 bytes to 1 gigabyte
  5. Toshiba Techa was a current model recommended by some stores.
  6. All brands have good and bad features.

Questions about rvwifi were fielded by John Schumacher. Some points that were made are

  1. No contract with Jonathan Miller in effect now. He is still servicing the park.
  2. Tango, a company from Texas has delayed starting up because, they have no contract.
  3. We are interested in having a seamless transition period.
  4. Some discussion is currently going on in regards to having a new DSL-high speed phone lines installed Telephone line would be able to be used while you were on the computer. Initial cost to set up this modem would be about $50.
  5. Wifi works well in hotels, airports, campgrounds where stays are brief so fewer people are on line at the same time. The signal is good for about 300 feet. Quite often wifi goes to the weakest signal and slowest computer on line at that moment. The additional boosters have enabled signals throughout the park
  6. Many parks are offering this rvwifi service free. This would be a good idea for a #1 park. Discussions are on going.

Thank you John.

On March 8th, we have a speaker about digital cameras. The camera club is invited.

March 1st, 2006

Format: Question/Answer

1. How do I clean my computer before selling or donating it?

Run software programs called "Secure Clean" or "White Canon" or "Erase It." These programs may be borrowed from Dick Harris #1853 or Joe Chambers #0410.

2. How can I open pictures that have been sent to me by email in favorites?

Have pictures resent as an attachment or right click & rename, open & go to Save as.

3. What are cookies? Are they good or bad?

Cookies are files that make it easier to return to a website. Bad cookies can be removed using Spybot or Ad-Aware programs. To find a list of cookies, go to Start, Search, Type "cookies" launch the search. You can select and delete from here if you so desire. Send to the recycle Bin, then dump the recycle bin. It is much easier to use Spybot or Adware.

4. I am constantly losing my email when I am typing my letter in Juno.

Joe demonstrated how to go to Juno website, go to compose email, go off line, write your letter, go back on line to sent or receive. Do all composing off line.

President Harris tried unsuccessfully to get a nominating committee for next year. There are positions for President, Vice President, and Secretary that need to be filled. It is time to have some new people and new ideas. Let's have everyone help. Positions can be shared.

Subject of Discussion: Defragmenting of Your Computer

Presented by K

It should be done at least once a month to keep your computer running at top speed; it's reorganizing your files so that they are together in one place on your computer. The processor does not have to run all over your hard drive looking for pieces so the files or programs can run.

Steps to Defragmenting:

  • Create a restore point. If your not sure how to do this review the computer club meeting notes of Jan 18,2006 on our internet site.
  • Run the disk cleanup program:
Click Start–Click All Programs–Click Accessories–Click System Tools–Click Disk Cleanup --Select C: drive (your hard drive) –Click OK ( Be patient it takes awhile . You will get a message saying its calculating space you will save by deleting certain files, especially the ones you pick up when browsing the internet. Place checkmark on the files you want removed. Click OK.

After you have finished with disk cleanup you need to run The Defragmenter in System Tools. You get to it exactly the same way you do the Disk Cleanup Program.

A discussion was held with regards to next year's format for the meetings. Several good ideas were tossed around.

  • Advertise our club and computer lab at the library, activity hallway, laundry mats.
  • Advertise topic in same area so people can chose interest topics.
  • Make use of computer lab and classroom during Wednesday meetings.
  • Submit information for Max and Newsletter.
  • Hold some meetings in groups so that we have small groups with a leader and computer to work on particular areas e.g. mouse, word, e-mail, defrag, files, website We need to share our knowledge.
  • More speakers on different topics.
  • Close meetings earlier in March and for 2 weeks in December.

Have a good summer and safe travels.
