November 14th, 2001

The meeting opened at 1:30 with President Bob Stevens presiding.

Bob mentioned that the Viewpoint Computer Lab would be run by our computer club this year and volunteer monitors were requested. The lab will be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 AM to noon. Punch cards may be purchased from the Activity Office, in the amounts of $5.00, $10,00 and $20.00. Pauline Haddon and Warren Ray spoke on the subject, mentioning that evening hours would also be requested and that there would be three Open Houses from 1 to 4 PM on the following dates: Monday, November 19;Monday, December 10; January 7. Overnighters will be given a complimentary 15 min. pass.

The park requires cookie makers for the Memorial Service, Nov. 19, 1 - 2 PM. Call Marg Human @ 2016.

Toby Darran spoke about Gateway and the fact that they would only allow a discount of 2% on purchases by club members.

Members to answer questions and give help are required.

A Librarian is still required for this year.

Milt Stark @ 5529 needs an assistant to operate the web site.

Helpers were requested for Casino Night.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade was mentioned for any who would like to start thinking about entering.

Pictures of our club at work are required for the Volunteer Appreciation Day.

Hugh Tamblyn @ 0918 volunteered to help get phone numbers switched over for the new computer system. Kay Johnson mentioned that we might want to hold off until some of the wrinkles have been worked out. Questions on the subject were answered.

Kay Johnson announced that the next three speakers would be as follows:

  • November 21 - Tim Willis
  • November 28 - A.J. Sapersteen
  • December 12 - Ulead

Paul Phoenix would like to come back and discuss downloading music which was agreed to by the members.

Bob mentioned that our Web site must be visited more often for us to be able to keep it. He went through it in some detail and explained each section.

After a five minute break, Milt Stark explained the Training Sessions that have been arranged with the help of Betty Newton. They will be Basic Skills, File Management, Other Basic Questions and System Maintenance. Sign up sheets were available on the back table.

The Secret Guide To Computers will once again be available @ $7.00.

Thanks to Betty Newton in being instrumental in arranging for the window blinds in the Garden Room.

Questions will be allowed next meeting.

November 21st, 2001

President Bob Stevens opened the meeting at 1:30 PM. Bob Randall is interfacing with the park ISP. This is a problem if you use ATT Worldnet with the ACRAM. For more information about this call Bob at 5347 to get around the firewall.

Kay Johnson introduced the speaker for the day, Tim Willis of the Computer Clinic of Chandler. They offer repair, instructions and sales. He stressed having a power protector with 15 amp polarized with ground. You can buy an outlet tester to see if wiring is correct at Home Depot. A good surge Protector at K Mart is $15, but the best is the lightning protector for $40 that will warrant the computer. Check both phone and computer connections. He answered questions from the audience.

There is a Norton Anti virus program for sale for $20 and a 15" monitor for $25. Call Bob Stevens.

AJ Sapersteen for InkJet will be here next week and will buy any spent cartridges you have. If you have special needs call him at 480-668- 0959.

Richard Krantz will talk about digital pictures in early December.

Warren Ray announced that open periods in the computer lab will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 - 12, further that we had several other blocks during the week when we could be open. Those blocks are Monday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon and evening. Wednesday afternoon, Thursday morning and evening and Friday evening. More monitors are needed to handle these additional times.

Milt Stark said there has been 34 sign up for Basic 1 - 35 for Basic 2 - 27 for Basic 3 and 24 for Basic 4. To accommodate everyone they will do lecture modes instead of hands on teaching. Bob Randall will teach Basic 1 and Milt Stark Basic 2. Basic 1 will be on Nov. 27 from 9:30 to noon and Basic 2 will be Nov. 29 from 1:30 to 4 and Friday Nov. 30 from 1:30 to 4. Betty will do a class on So you want to get a computer on Wed. December 12 from 6:30 to 9:30.

Warren and Betty will do a program on scanners on Dec. 5.

Kay and Milt talked about the emergency start up disc.

Presidents had a meeting with Starr. Feb. 3 is a charity auction. Save up all used things for this function.

November 28th, 2001

President Bob Stevens opened the meeting at 1:30 PM

Denis Donovan is giving classes on beginning spread sheet on Dec. 3, 10, and 17 at 7 to 8 PM. A second class can be added the same dates from 8:15 to 9:15 PM. You must be a member and only 1 site member per class. You also must have a computer on your site because there will be homework. He also has a 13" monitor he will give away.

Kay Johnson said on Dec. 12 Richard Krantz will speak on video and digital cameras. If you see an error message 718 on Express Internet try taking out 9, . Kay has a disc for help. If you want to be on the data doctor E-mail list contact www.computerproblems.com

There is a very bad virus that spreads quickly. It is W32.Badtrans.B@MM.

Warren Ray has the following monitors for December. Monday morning is Nordseth and Rogers. Tuesday evening is Bailey (and needs another). Wednesday morning is Hoffert and Hall. Thursday evening is Schultz and Hadden. Friday morning is Tivy. Friday evening is Bloomquist. We need another one for Friday morning and Friday evening.

December 10 is open house from 1 to 4.

Betty Newton's Class is Dec. 12 from 6:30 to 9:30 PM on How to buy a computer.

Kay introduced AJ Sapersteen from Inkjet Southwest. He gave the club a check for $19 from the cartridges that were given him. He had a lot of good suggestions for filling cartridges. One was to fill before they run completely out. It keeps air out of them. HP has a trend that when they sell a printer the cartridge is only half full. If there is an A on the cartridge it is fully filled. A G means half filled and a D is 2/3rd filled. He then answered questions.

Chuck Conner gave the treasurer report showing $1,957.44 on hand.

Betty Newton spoke of the need for everyone to have an anti- virus program and to update it regularly. She brought up the free anti-virus web site on http://www.grisoft.co m/html/us_index.html. Betty also said Larry of Landmark Computers had stated that the Microtek scanner seems to have the least problems. Anyone buying a scanner should make sure it would work with the program on the computer (95, 98, ME and now XP).

Bob Stevens covered: W32.Goner is a mass mailing worm Zip files must be decompressed. One site is www.webattack.com. Data Doctors

Warren Ray needs monitors for Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6:30 to 9:30. Computer Club will host open house in computer lab Monday.

December 12th, 2001

President Bob Stevens called the meeting to order.

Kay Johnson introduced Richard Katz from Ulead Products who explained the Ulead Photo Explorer 7.0 Pro. Photo Explorer combines tools for acquiring, viewing, organizing, adjusting and sharing digital images and video clips.

Warren Ray announced that substitute monitor needed for Tuesday night December 18. Also monitors needed for the computer lab on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m. beginning January 1.

Denis Donovan discussed fire walls, stating the www.grc.com was an interesting site with links for firewall tests to be performed on a personal computer. Good sources for freeware are www.zdnet.com and www.nonags.com.

Milt Stark stated exercises will be on the club's web site to test knowledge of 4 basic skills lectures. Go to the home page and click on the "Workshops" link, then click on "Click here" at the top of the Workshops page. Labs will be set up to assist those who need help in accomplishing any of the exercises if volunteers can be found to assist in the labs.

December 19th, 2001

Bob Stevens welcomed the group. He stated the business office has been receiving many questions for help by non-members. A letter written to Kerin McWilliams in the business office was read. The letter stated only computer club members would get help. Viewpoint Computer Club web site www.viewpointcomputerclub.org has list of those willing to help in each area. Bob asked that he or Milt Stark be notified if there are problems with mentor list. Bob asked that members check the mentor list for a subject they would be willing to help someone with.

Betty Newton reported that she had purchased a scanner and CD burner for the computer club. The software will be installed on the computers in the lab and available for use.

Warren Ray needs volunteers monitors for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. in the computer lab beginning January 2.

There will be no meeting on December 26.

Milt demonstrated the search engine www.google.com to lists sites for tutorial help. Among those are www.learnthat.com and www.customguide.com. He will put a link on our web page under workshops listing the sites.

Jackie Schulz will be chairperson for the banquet February 15.

January 2, 2002

Bob Stevens called the meeting to order.

Kay Johnson and Joe Chambers explained the Express Internet. This is a means of connecting to the Internet through Viewpoint's ISP instead of using the telephone lines.

Chuck Conner, Treasurer, reported a balance of $1898.12

Warren Ray reported he needs a volunteer for the lab on Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m.

Bob complimented Milt Stark on his work with the computer club's web site. Milt talked about tutorial web sites and the difference between E-mail clients and web mail.

CD's are available for loan in the computer lab and should be returned in 48 hours.

Bob announced those with windows XP and ME should download a patch. He also announced discounts books at Half Price Bookstore located between Ross and Best Buy at Superstition Springs.

January 2nd, 2002 Executive Board Meeting

Following the regular meeting, the Executive Board of Viewpoint Computer Club called to order by Bob Stevens, President.

Jackie Schulz, Social Chairman, reported on plans for the Computer Club banquet to be held on Friday, February 15, at 5:30 p.m. in the Garden Room

  • Price will be $6.00 per person. Jackie Schulz, Vera McCloud, Willa Hall, Betty Newton, and Nancy Fisher selected the menu.
  • Jackie Schulz, Social Chairman, will make tickets, sell tickets, notify activity office for February bulletin, put on Max, and notify Milt Stark to put on club's web site.
  • Sundowner Catering Company, Inc., 480-898-3567, will serve the banquet.
  • Warren Ray volunteered to help with entertainment.
  • The election of club officers for the 2002/2003 season will be held at the regular Wednesday meeting on March 6th, 2002. The President will appoint a nominating chairperson.

December 10th, 2002

The meeting was opened by Bob Stevens at 1:30 PM

New people were told they were allowed 2 visits free and after that should pay $10 dues.

Remember to not leave your computer on line if you are not using it.

Bob opened the session for questions for 20 minutes. You may also get help from books, Video professor teaching discs, your ISP and on line at ASK, ASK ME, DATA DOCTORS and COMPUTER PROBLEMS.

Acrobat Reader is needed for some of the tutorials downloaded from sites on the VPCC Tutorial Web page.

Kay Johnson introduced the speaker Matt McCann from Intuit who talked about Quicken 2002 Deluxe. Among other things, he said that Zonelabs.com will install a fire wall. Jim Teaser and Norma Nelson won Quicken 2002 Suite and Reed Johnston won Home & Business.

Warren Ray says lab has a CD burner and a scanner available for use by club members.

Banquet is Feb. 15 with cocktail hour at 5:30 and dinner at 6 PM. Tickets can be purchased from Jackie Schultz for $6 each.

Betty Newton has said that the Multi Generational Center has 1 hour classes for basic computer. Register in advance. Call 654-7600 - enrollment services. Windows 98 Level 1 is on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8 to 11. Windows 98 Level 2 - January is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 to noon Cost is $36.50.

Basic classes are listed on the clubs web site (click on the "Workshops" link. There are sign up sheets for 30 students per session.

If any club member wants to learns computer basics by using tutorials, Milt Stark will help 1 on 1 if you E-mail (click on "Click here to E-mail" at the bottom of this page).

Computer classes at Mesa Library are free.

Warren Ray will offer computer basics training using the Video Professor VCR tapes on Tuesday, Jan. 22 in lab from 9:30 to noon..

Milt Stark will do the windows explorer class on Thursday and Friday from 1:30 to 4 this week.

Hugh Tamblyn will do a class on Learning how to fill cartridges for HP Series 600, 800 or 900 printers on Jan 29, from 9:30 to noon.

Bob answered questions from the floor and from written questions. When the phone lines are all busy you can call the gate at either 8700 or 8702 to get an emergency call out of the park.

January 23rd, 2002

Kerin, from the Business office, talked about the phone service from its beginning in 1984 until now and all the problems they are encountering with the phone lines and the computers throughout the park. She asked that we be more prudent with our usage. She also answered a lot of questions from the club.

Kay Johnson then introduced our speaker for the day, Ken Colburn from Data Doctor Computer Services who talked about his web site and answered a lot of questions. One thing he stressed is that Zone Alarm is not really needed unless you have a high speed connection. He is on Saturday mornings on AM 620 KTAR Radio.

Hugh Tamblyn announced his class on HP refill is on Tuesday at 9:30 am.

Jackie said there are still tickets for the banquet that can be bought at club meetings or at her space 1949.

January 30th, 2002

President Bob Stevens opened the meeting at 1:30 P.M.

Richard Street has a monitor he will give away before he leaves the park. He is at space 4931. Bob asked for questions from the members and there were a lost of questions asked, majority of them being about AOL and answers and help was received from other members. There will be a meeting on Feb. 6 even though half of the audience will be attending block parties.

Betty spoke about a new virus NEW PHOTOS FROM MY PARTY, do not open. She also spoke about anti virus updates and had sign up sheets for help and helpers on the different systems. She will order a couple Net Zero discs for the library. The annual meeting is March 6 which will be election of officers. A volunteer for secretary is needed. You may contact Betty Newton at 1941 to volunteer. She informed us that an open house is not permitted in the park by Viewpoint owners. If you would like to voice your views on this you can E-mail cecilash@viewpointrv.com or reebgroup@home.com. This is an unfair practice and also the resales office is very understaffed. Also, you need to see what you are wanting to buy.

Kay hasn't received the Secret Guide to Computers as yet. Teresa Jacobs from Microsoft will be speaking at the March 16 meeting.

Warren Ray will meet with the lab monitors on Tuesday morning Feb. and needs monitors for Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon. On Tuesday the 12th of February from 9 to noon he will show the Video Professor to the first 5 to sign up.

Milt Stark had a very interesting display on things that can be done with spreadsheets.

February 6th, 2002

Bob Stevens called the meeting to order.

Bob announced there will be no meeting on March 6. Elections will be on March 13.

Warren Ray asked if there is interest in a workshop on filling ink cartridges.

Denis Donovan read the instructions for setting idle disconnect on computer.

Discussion followed on new phone rules.

Jackie Schulz, social chairman, asked for volunteers to meet 3:30 p.m. Friday 15 to set up for the banquet that evening.

Bob announced a less expensive ISP www.globespeed.net.

Chuck Connor, treasurer, gave the treasurer's report. Balance on hand 1-31-2002 is $3,019.12. A check will be written for the banquet that evening to bring the total near $2,000.

Cecil Ash and Kerin MacWilliams introduced Tracy Hanson (formerly employed at Viewpoint) to discuss Tracy's company Sequent System. Sequent is an enhanced DSL system that allows use of the phone line while connected to the internet. Six initial ports are available for trial. The system will then be available for $150 initial setup fee and a monthly fee anticipated to be $40 a month with a 6-month discounted rate.

February 13th, 2002

President Bob Stevens opened the meeting at 1:30 PM. He introduced Theresa Calvert from Microsoft Corp. who demonstrated and talked about Windows XP: New Standard. After her interesting presentation she answered questions and gave away a home addition of Windows XP.

Kay Johnson gave the names of the people that still owed for and should pick up the Guide to Computer books that are in.

Jackie is all set up for the banquet except for a few more men to help set up tables. Some men volunteered.

Bob asked if there was an interest in discussing the Control Panel at a meeting and found that there was enough interest to have it done.

Warren said there was a good usage in the lab. Will add Saturday mornings, but after March 1 will stop evening hours.

Milt took a survey for training seminars or classes to see where the interest lies.

February 20th, 2002

Bob Stevens opened the meeting at 1:30 P.M. by thanking the committee who did the work on the banquet and especially those who work in the lab.

Warren Ray did an interesting presentation on the Microsoft Works Database program which has been installed on many recently purchased computers.

Bob talked about Black Ice fire wall. The web site for learning about the start-up menu is http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenh am.

Nancy Fisher will hold a class on geneology next Wednesday night, Feb 27th at 6:30 to 9:30 PM.

Milt Stark thanked Betty Newton, Bob Randall, Hugh Tamblyn, Denis Donovan and Warren Ray for holding classes during this season. Warren indicated that he would hold a class on Video Professor II or Microsoft Works Database if enough participants are interested. Milt offered to teach a class on spreadsheets using free 602 software. Volunteer instructors are still needed.

K. Johnson talked about Clean installation information which can be found under helpful hints in the Computer Club web site. Larry Martin from Landmark Computers will be our speaker next week. Everyone should make a copy of a start-up disc in case you need to reboot your computer.

Milt had a very in depth interesting talk and demonstration on Print Screen 2000 and an alternative free digital image program, called IrfanView, which can be used to accomplish the same thing as Printscreen 2000. IrfanView has additional functionality lacking in Printscreen 2000.

Betty Newton read the following announcement for the annual General Meeting & election of officers:

The VP Computer Club annual General Meeting has been set for Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. in the Garden Room, our usual meeting time. At that meeting the Election of Officers for the next Season will be part of the Agenda.

As Chair of the Nominating Committee, with Milt Stark as my Assistant , we will be bringing before the meeting our Committee report, which is as follows:

For the Office of Secretary, we will place in nomination the name of Nancy Fisher, #4913

For the Office of Treasurer, we will place in nomination the name of Bill Rodgers, #5527

For the Office of Vice-President, we will place in nomination the name of Warren Ray, #5107. Warren has asked to stay as Vice President with responsibility for the Computer Lab as he feels that one more year of work on the organization and running of the Lab will see it in good shape.

For the Office of President, Bob Stevens, has said he would like to let his name stand for re-election. We have also received a nomination from a member for Hugh Tamblyn, and in order to make members aware of this other nomination, we are placing into nomination for the Office of President the names of Bob Stevens and Hugh Tamblyn.

Nominations for all offices will be accepted from the floor at the meeting. provided that the nominee has signified they are willing to accept the office.

Where more than one person is nominated for an office there will be a vote by members present. This can be done by show of hands if the nominees leave the room, or by secret ballot if desired by the meeting.

February 27th, 2002

President Bob Stevens opened the meeting with a welcome at 1:30 PM. Darla from space # 600 has a 17" color monitor for sale for $100.

Betty Newton thanked everyone for the gift and wishes at the dinner. She is going to buy Windows XP. There is an amendment to the nominations for election of officers. President Bob Stevens has withdrawn his name. The slate is as follows: Hugh Tamblyn - President, Nancy Fisher - Secretary, Bill Rogers - Treasurer and Warren Ray - Vice President.

There will be no meeting next week, March 6.

March 14 at 9 AM will be the cartridge refill class in the computer lab.

Warren is going to refill Canon printer cartridgess in the lab March 4 at 6:30. You may come and watch.

Jackie Schultz thanked those that helped at the banquet.

Beginner class for geneaology is tonight at 6:30 and the more advanced class will be held March 20.

Video Professor 2 is Monday, March 11 from 6 to 9pm.

Friday March 15 is Building a Data Base - MSWorks.

Mar 13th, 2002

President Bob Stevens opened the meeting at 1:30. There is a turbo tax - 2001 on sale for $10 at #2574. There is a free scanner at #5321. Election of officers was held. Secretary is Nancy Fisher, Treasurer is Bill Rogers. Vice President is Warren Ray and President is Hugh Tamblyn all elected by acclamation.

Bob had a swan song statement: ' It has been a great year, I have enjoyed being president, primarily because of the fine support by the members and officers. I hope you will continue supporting your new president and you have a healthy and prosperous coming year. Betty- the computer Club and its members are better off having known you. Thanks for all you have done and we wish you the best in your new life style, you will be missed.'

Chuck Connors filed a copy of the treasurer's report. The copy is filed in the secretary's book. The total on hand is $1,638.37. Chuck made a motion to accept the report and Betty Newton seconded it.

Milt will have an E-mail workshop in the computer lab on Friday, March 22 at 1:30 to 4:00. Nancy Fisher will have a follow up seminar on geneology March 20 at 6:30. Warren Ray will have a Building a Data Base seminar on Monday March 18 from 6 to 9 PM He has Microsoft software on Micro trips and streets 2002 that he will share. March 20 meeting will include a lesson on Control Panel.

There is a very serious virus out now that claims to be an update for windows - includes outlook express. Information can be found on the Norton and McAffee home pages - Security Patch from Microsoft. It is written about on the Data Doctor page also.

Mar 20th, 2002

President Hugh Tamblyn opened the meeting at 1:30 and asked for questions from the floor.

Dennis Morrow from EVU will speak at the next meeting, which will be the last of the year.

There is a new link on the VP web site entitled Phoenix Computer Users Group.

The rest of the meeting was a presentation by Milt Stark. He gave an in depth talk and presentation on reducing image file sizes using IrfanView, a free program for digital images, and a free utility program, PowerDesk 4, used for working with files.

President Hugh Tamblyn opened the meeting at 1:30 PM and had Kay Johnson introduce the speaker for the day. He introduced Dennis Morrow from DLM Computing who demonstrated the program Flip Album and demonstrated an overview, a wedding album and the way to create a picture album. After an interesting demonstration he gave the club a copy of Flip Album and Warren Ray won a copy .

Questions were answered and the President wished everyone a safe trip home as this was the last meeting for 2001-2002 season.
